This was made for crews to clear brush and foliage from fields of fire or for cutting through jungle growth. The medical corpsmen could use it to cut wood and bamboo to make stakes, splints, etc. It was not designed as a fighting knife but Marines did use this during many battles (according to Marines that survived). Overall, this machete bolo knife is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition. The rivets securely fasten the wood grip panels to the tang. They look like they have been sanded down and have some discoloration. The two wood grip panels have light handling marks and scuffs. There are chips on the back of both panels and they have slightly separated from the tang. There is also a small chip on the right panel near the blade. The panels have started to darken with age. The spine has nicks and dings. The sides have light pitting and discoloration. The blade has nicks and dings, plus appears to have been sharpened. It does NOT have its original factory edge. The tip is intact and comes to a round straight point. The finish is in the white. The left side of the blade is marked "U.S.M.C. / VILLAGE BLACKSMITH". The metal / leather scabbard is in Very Good - Very Good Plus condition. There is an M1910 wire hook hanger that is securely attached to the body of the scabbard. It retains its original shape. The metal locket has light handling marks and scuffs. It has started to oxidize and turn colors. It is securely attached to the leather body. The body has no rips or tears and the stitching is sewn tightly. There are some light scrapes and draglines. The rivets are securely fastened and have some light verdigris where the leather metal meets the leather. It retains most of its original color. The knife slides in and out easily. The markings on the back are "U.S. / BOYT / 42". This machete knife and scabbard will be a great addition to your WWII USMC Medical Corpsman collection, or a bolo machete knife collection in general.
