Description: SCARCE WW2 British MILITARY map of ITALY entitled "ROMA" (ROME). "RESTRICTED" Produced as one of two adjoining "SKETCH MAP" sheets (the other being "TARANTO", this is a deliberately stripped back survey designed to only highlight the main SETTLEMENTS, ROADS, RAILWAYS, RIVERS and major altitude contours at 400m intervals (starting at 200m). Produced at a scale of 1:500,000, a scale normally favoured for aeronautical maps, it gives a basic overview of the wide area covered. This kind of map is perfect for planning and administration purposes. The earliest 'reproduction' information given dates to September 1943, the same month the Allies invaded Italy. A subsequent reprint of only 5,000 sheets was undertaken in March 1944, and this particular example was produced in June 1944. I've never seen this unusual sheet before, and I suspect its original purpose would have been related to the outline planning stages for the Allied Invasion. The fact that there were no sheets for the area to the North of Rome, suggests it was first created with a Southern invasion in mind, with areas on the adjoining "Taranto" sheet also under consideration. It's in very good condition for its age, with two neat repairs undertaken to a couple of linear 'snags' which incurred during its recent shipping from the Middle East. These have been carefully carried out using a specialist acid free (non-yellowing) archive repair tape of the kind used by museums and libraries etc (see last two photos for close ups).
