Description: A printed letter from John J. Pershing, Commander in Chief, American Expeditionary Forces, to "My Fellow Soldiers" dated February 28, 1919. The letter is printed on one side of a page and measures about 6 3/4" x 9 1/2". The letter is in very nice condition. There are creases where the document was originally folded. There is a stain or discoloration on the lower right-hand corner of the reverse side, but it is not apparent from the front. There are no extraneous pen or pencil notations. This copy is unusual because it is not addressed to a particular soldier or signed by an officer; the address and signature lines at the bottom are left blank. The paper is watermarked "Linen Navarro [?]uma Berthol_ Voir_" (the watermark is cut off at the right). In this inspiring farewell, issued 3 1/2 months after Armistice Day, General Pershing told the troops: "Now that your service with the American Expeditionary Forces is about to terminate, I can not let you go without a personal word." He continued: "At the call to arms, the patriotic young manhood of America eagerly responded and became the formidable army whose decisive victories testify to its efficiency and its valor." The rest of the letter can be read in the accompanying photographs. A piece of history, suitable for framing. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Our father was a bibliophile who collected rare books, letters, and ephemera for more than 60 years.
