Born in 1904 in Vernon, Alabama, Perkins longed to see the world beyond his rural home. Joining the Merchant Marine at age 15, and then the U.S. Marines at age 17, he traveled to 28 countries over the next 48 years. During one of his many travels abroad, Perkins was converted to Evangelical Christianity. In 1969, Perkins returned home to Alabama to establish a Church of God congregation in Bankston, just miles from his birthplace. It was here that the next phase of his life would emerge. Building a church and meeting hall near his home on five acres of land, Perkins would spend the rest of his life filling the grounds of his church with signs, structures and paintings – blending patriotism and religion in red, white and blue. Like many other Visionary artists, the work of B. F. “Brother Ben” Perkins was his ministry.
