Description: My photos don't really capture the impressive "sculpting" of this 1971 Wheaton Glass Co. presidential plate. George, the laurels "orbiting" immediately around his profile, and then the 16 stars around them, are truly masterful in such a simple plate. And they should be. By the time Wheaton Glass issued this ceremonial plate in 1971 (you can see a ©W71 to the right just above Washington's head) and then several more presidential plates to celebrate the Bicentennial, the New Jersey company had already been around for 83 years, since 1888. It began life as T.C. Wheaton & Co., in Millville, NJ making homeopathic vials, laboratory glass, perfume bottles, pharmaceutical glass , and nursing bottles. A logical beginning since founder Theodore C. Wheaton was, himself, both a physician and a pharmacist. The business with general drugstore and perfume type goods until the 1930s when it expanded into glass door knobs, novelties and specialties...and beer bottles. By the time these presidential plates were made in the 1970s, the company -- still under Wheaton family control -- was making all types of decorative glass, blown glass, materials for electronics, and household ware. While purchased by another company in 1996, the Wheaton name was still being used as late as 2019 in one form or another. So why shouldn't it make a quality George Washington plate? You can buy one or two. You'll get a 20% if you buy both, plus I'll refund excess shipping. Happy to answer any questions that I can. Thanks for reading this AI-free summary!Rick
