Description: Vintage U.S.Navy Blue Sailor Cloth Flat Cap, Beret The main outer fabric is in very nice shape without holes. Lined with black fabric. The diamond shaped brown protective fabric ( I believe it had been oiled silk ) on the inside is missing except from remnants in the stitching from wear. The leather band around inside of cap has written black initials J V T, the initials are also scratched into the leather. The leather doesn't feel brittle, though there are a couple small tears on the edge. There is a small remnant of a 1" wide white cloth label sewn into the seam under the leather on the right side of the cap. I don't see any indication of size; the circumference of the inner lining is about 20". There is some wear to the U.S. Navy lettering on the ribbon, mainly on the side of the A, an a small amount of wear on the edge of the ribbon. This style of cap was introduced in 1933, and the names of the vessels appeared on the ribbon until 1941. The diamond shaped lining was changed to a different plastic material in 1949, so I believe this cap dates from between 1941 and 1949.
