It is a vintage piece and shows some wear-see all my pix-but honestly in my opinion, it just adds to the old world charm. I had asthma and am very sensitive to smells especially smoke. If it smells like smoke I'm not buying/selling it. That said, I am not always sure if something came from a home with pets in it.
