The necklace is marked "Alva" and comes with the original box and paperwork.The pendant measures 2 3/4 inches in length. The chain measures 24 inches in length. The necklace has been well-maintained and cared for over the years. It is in excellent vintage condition. Coptic Pendant. The silver original is from Ethiopia. In the 15th century, Emperor Zara Ya' Eqob of Ethiopia decreed that every Christian should wear a neck cross. They were made of gold, bronze, copper or wood until the beginning of the 19th century, when silver became available through trade. Then silver neck crosses were widely used and survive in large numbers. There is great diversity of form, including most known varieties of crosses and finials, with many variations found only in Ethiopia. In this piece, the eight-pointed star is surmounted by a hinged circular form. Authorized, copyrighted reproduction, made of silver plated metal, from the original in the Museum of African Art, Washington D.C., by Alva Museum Replicas, New York. Alva Studios, operated by Alfred Wolkenberg. Alfred was born in Vienna in 1911 and immigrated to the US in 1939. In 1948 he founded Alva Studios of Long Island City, NY.
