USS California; This 624' Tennessee Class battleship was commissioned in 1921, and served in the Pacific Fleet including the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack, until decommissioned in 1946. On Dec 7th she took two aerial bomb hits and one magazine exploded. The vessel sank in the mud next to NAS Ford Island, with only her superstructure above the water! She was raised and repaired at Bremerton to fight in the Pacific Theater starting in May 1944. She fought in several major naval battles and was hit by a suicide plane in early 1945. She thus earned seven WW II Battle Stars, was placed in reserve and sold to be recycled into scrap metal in 1959. See her web pages for details of her construction, service, battles and disposition.
