Description: United States M17 Field Protective Mask dated the second week for July 1962 by Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, lot 2C1 originating from Firestone, Size Small. The M17 Field Protective mask was standardized in 1959 and began production in 1960 with the only manufacturers at this time being M-S-A and D.T, with Firestone tire and rubber taking up the contract on third week of January, 1962 and ending their contract in early 1963, leaving D.T and M-S-A, the only manufacturers, until D.T's inevitable contract exit in 1964, leaving M-S-A the only manufacturer until 1990 when the M17 Field Protective Mask ended development. The Firestone M17 models differ from other manufacturers is that they have much smaller nose areas and the weirdest rubber molds that seem equal to M-S-A molds given the weird blueish black rubber blend only really seen on M-S-A masks, but weirdly seen on this Firestone example. The way to identify a Firestone M17 if the seller decides you aren't good enough for a photo of the date roundel, you can always look to the lot number on slide seven, which if Firestone, will always start with "2011" for whatever reason. This mask came with a pair of very early crimpless M1 outserts that apparently are unable to be fitted to any mask, as I tried for at least 20 minutes to pull back the rubber apron and place them on the lenses to no avail. The carrier for this mask is a first-generation chemical corps marked M15 carry bag originally stamped medium but restamped Small.
