Description: Offering a subscription receipt for the important “Federal Gazette” accomplished and signed by ANDREW BROWN as follows, “Received from W.J.L. Coates two dollars & a quarter being his subscription for the Federal Gazette from the 8th day of Dec. 1790 to the 8th day of June 1791.” One page, 7 x 2 ¾, Philadelphia: 8 June 1791. Obviously cut from an account book as typical. BROWN (1744-1797) established the “Federal Gazette” in 1788. It was the first journal to regularly publish the congressional debates and was the “main channel through which the friends of the federal constitution address the public. “ [Appleton] The name was changed in 1793 to the Philadelphia Gazette. Brown was the first who regularly reported the debates in Congress. Brown was an Irish soldier, born in the north of Ireland. He joined the British army as an officer, serving in North America. Brown settled in Massachusetts and fought on the American side during the Revolutionary War at Lexington, Bunker Hill and elsewhere. He was made Muster-Master General in 1777 and afterwards Major. Brown died on February 4, 1797, from injuries he received while fruitlessly endeavoring to save his wife and three children from a fire that destroyed his establishment. His son, Andrew, carried on the Gazette until 1803. Taking the British side of politics, he became unpopular and moved to England, where he died in 1847. Some light browning along the left edge and light offsetting from folding. An excellent example of American history rooted in the U.S. Constitution.
