Trajan Decius, commonly known as Decius, was a Roman emperor who reigned from 249 to 251 AD. He was born around 201 AD in Budalia, present-day Serbia. Decius came from a distinguished family and began his career as a military commander. He served in various provinces and was known for his loyalty and competence. In 249 AD, he was proclaimed emperor by his troops after defeating Emperor Philip the Arab in battle. Decius' reign was marked by his attempts to restore traditional Roman values and revive the authority of the Roman state. He initiated a renewed emphasis on Roman traditions, including the revival of the ancient practice of requiring citizens to perform a sacrificial ritual to the gods of Rome. One of the most significant challenges of Decius' rule was the outbreak of the Decian persecution, which aimed to suppress Christianity and enforce traditional Roman religious practices. This marked the first organized empire-wide persecution of Christians by the Roman government. Decius faced military threats on multiple fronts, including invasions by the Goths and conflicts along the Danube frontier. In 251 AD, he died in battle against the invading Goths near Abrittus in present-day Bulgaria. Despite his attempts to restore traditional Roman values, Decius' reign was relatively short and marked by internal and external challenges. His policies, such as the Decian persecution, had a lasting impact on the relationship between the Roman state and Christianity.
