Description: The Fourth Down By Leslie W. Quirk Little, Brown and Company Boston, Massachusetts 1929 First published by Little, Brown and Company in 1912, although the first copyright date is 1911. A volume in The Wellworth College Series. [8], 321 p.: frontispiece and three other plates, all by Henry Sumner Watson (1868-1933), an American artist and illustrator; 19.5 cm. (7.75 inches). Green cloth with dark- and light-green-stamped spine and front cover titles and with dark- and light-green with white-stamped front-cover illustration (presumably by Henry Sumner Watson). No dust jacket. On page 51 there is a violet library handstamp in the bottom margin, not impacting the text, but there are no other library markings or any indications on the pages or binding that this book was ever accessioned by the library. Second Printing "His name was Penfield Wayne, and he was a newly registered freshman at Wellworth University. Just now he sat at the window in his room, dividing his time between reading from the blue, paper-covered book in his hand, and pausing to stare out upon the lower campus" [opening lines of the book]. Leslie W. Quirk (1882-1960), was a Wisconsin-born writer who published numerous childrens' books, including Jimmie Goes to War, based on his own experiences as an ambulance driver for the American Field Service during World War I. Book is in Good Minus Condition: complete with all illustrations. Pages are generally clean, with about a dozen of them having soiling in the margins with little or no impact on the text; there is scattered corner creasing. Spine lightly frayed at both ends; corners bumped and worn. Back hinge has started to separate. As noted above, on page 51 there is a violet library handstamp in the bottom margin, not impacting the text, but there are no other library markings or any indications on the pages or binding that this book was ever accessioned by the library. A rather scarce early 20th-century college football novel.
