THE BEST! 19thC. Southern India Hindu Mysore Carved Sandalwood Box

Description: Welcome to BKCranston! Please take a moment to read the description, condition and browse the photos. Description: This is a very special and extremely well done sandalwood box from the Mysore, Karnataka, India. This is where the finest carvers of sandal wood boxes lived and worked. The top of this box is carved with intricate foliate tendril design surrounded by an array of palm frons, each corner with triangular copper inset panels. The edge of cover has the finest carved curled leaf pattern with the corners terminating in a column of leafy vegetation. The sides of box are carved with ten different arched panels of mythical gods and goddesses including Vishnu, Parvarti, Hanuman the Monkey God, Krishna, Kshatriya warrior and Virabhadra Durga on horse to name a few. The silver push button mechanism works very nicely to reveal the interior. The edges are protacted and nicely dressed with silver trim and the essence of the sandalwood smells delightful. The box sit's upon four small circular pad feet. Measures approx.; 6 3/4" long x 3 1/4" deep, 2 13/16" tall (17.14cm x 8.25cm x 7.14cm ) Condition: There is some tight cracks to the wood as the photos show, there was a plaque or something in the top of box which is long gone leaving a sticky glue residue. Some dust from sitting many years, just a beauty, a very fine antique 19th century box! Please view all photographs as they are part of the condition report.
