Description: Stunning Vintage Sterling Silver & Murano Art Glass Goldstone Millefiori Pendant A masterfully executed piece featuring a goldstone disc with colorful molten-in millefiori shapes made in Murano, Italy, attached to a Sterling Silver bale. "Goldstone", also called "Aventurine Glass", based on the original Italian name "Avventurina" (from avventura, "adventure" or "chance"), is a type of glittering glass which has been made for centuries. The finished product can take a smooth polish and be carved into beads, figurines, or other artifacts suitable for semiprecious stone, and in fact goldstone is often mistaken for or misrepresented as a natural material.One original manufacturing process for goldstone was invented in seventeenth-century Venice by the Miotti family, which was granted an exclusive license by the Doge. According to another legend, goldstone was an accidental discovery by Italian monks or the product of alchemy. This is why it is sometimes also referred to as "Monkstone" or "Monk's Gold". A goldstone amulet from 12th- to 13th-century Persia in the collection of the University of Pennsylvania shows that other, earlier artisans were also able to create the material long before the Venetians.
