Description: Strasbourg, France to USA cover 3 50c stamps cancelled 1937 + slogan cancellation to Sheaffer Pen Co I am going through some of my late grandfather's possessions, and he has some interesting postage stamps and envelopes. Grandpa lived in Ft. Madison, Iowa, where Sheaffer Pen Company was and still is headquartered. At the time, fine pens like theirs were often sold in jewelry stores, so Grandpa has envelopes from lots of jewelers, stationers and fancy pen stores around the world that must have once held payments or orders. Envelope is slit at top and right edges from opening and removal of contents. Envelope is from S. Wittelshofer in Strasbourg, France, to W.A. Sheaffer Pen Company in Fort Madison, Iowa, USA. Top left is marked:"Via Le Havre, S.S. Normandie." The steam turbo-electric propelled S.S. Normandie was buuilt in 1935 as the largest and fastest passenger ship afloat. She made 139 westbound transatlatic crossings from Le Havre to New York City. During WWII, she was seized and renamed the USS Lafayette. In 1942, while she was being converted to a troopship, there was a fire aboard. She capsized on her port side and came to rest, partially submerged, on the bottom of the Hudson River. Though she was raised and salvage begun, was too expensive to repair her, and she was scrapped in 1946. There are 3 50 Centime stamps, all in nice shape. Cancellation is 11 May, 1937 in Strasbourg, France. There is a slogan cancellation that says:"Visitez La FoireEurop. StrasbourgEn Septembre." I will ship as soon as I receive payment.
