There are holes drilled into the bottom of the horizontal pipes to allow for the escape of gas or propane (whichever you are using). This design prevents them from becoming clogged with any potential debris. Such as when you're destroying those "evidential and incriminating documents" :) Or, those photos of an "old flame" -- pun intended; I just couldn't help it. We suppose that these are meant to be installed and hidden beneath your Faux logs. Your gas supply line should have a shut-off valve (as per local building code) and; perhaps, a "finer-adjustment" valve installed between this burner and said shut-off valve, so that you have more control of the flame's intensity (higher or lower), and can set the mood just right for the occasion as there may be times when you want it more or less robust.
