See photos of card fronts and backs. There are 3 cards in this lot. Sparky was a relative unknown former player when Bob Howsam tagged him as Reds Manager after the 1969 season. "Sparky Who" was the headline in the Cincinnati newspapers, but soon he was a household name, leading the Reds to a 70-30 start in 1970. Injuries and lack of team speed after moving into Riverfront Stadium hurt that team, but they still made it to the World Series, losing to Baltimore. In 1971, the team failed as astroturf demanded speed. Howsam again came to the rescue, picking up Joe Morgan, Cesar Geronimo and Jack Billingham from Houston. From there the Reds and Anderson thrived, winning the division title in 1972, 1973, 1975, 1976, playing in the World Series again in 1972, 1975 and 1976, winning in the latter two years back-to-back. The Big Red Machine would soon be dismantled, and Anderson eventually dismissed as Manager. The Tigers came calling and again Anderson led them to the World Series Championship in 1984, going wire-to-wire. Known as 'Captain Hook' for his short leash with pitchers, he was elected to the Reds and Tigers Halls of Fame and in a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
