Description: Snellius Minerals Fluorite Cleavage Plate Sequence FCPS1 This item is series of cleavage plates of fluorite cleaved in sequence from the same crystal selected to showcase the optical properties of fluorite. Fluorite is isometric and therefore isotropic. This makes for rather boring viewing with a polariscope, but that is an excellent contrast to our many other anisotropic specimens for sale. The first photo shows the fluorite cleavage plate sequence unstacked viewed lying on cleavage surfaces {111} in transmitted plane polarized light. The video demonstrates the optical properties of the fluorite cleavage plate sequence with a polariscope. The video begins viewing the fluorite cleavage plates stacked together in transmitted plane polarized light. We unstack the sequence of cleavage plates in transmitted plane polarized light. Bringing in the upper polarizer in this view shows the crystal to be at extinction, as it should be! The second photo shows the cleavage plates stacked in transmitted plane polarized light, and the third photo shows the fluorite cleavage plates with crossed polarizers at extinction. The final three photos are in ambient light with a ruler for scale. These are fun to try and reassemble into an octahedron, and also can be used to explain spinel law twinning.
