Provenance and Chain of Custody: This is an unusual and unique collectible piece of WWII military memorabilia that has a documented provenance, chain of custody and dual signatures. American soldier, Sergeant Rhodes of the Hq Co 722nd R.O.B. rescued this "great treasure" (his words) from a burned out German military vehicle on April 23, 1945 at Kassel, a city which was captured by the U.S. First Army, after the single deadliest air raid of the war. The city burned for days and more than 10,000 city dwellers died. Sgt Rhodes passed it along to T/Sgt Norman Stephenson of the same 722nd battalion, who in turn, left it in the care of Winifred Stephenson of Hollywood, California when he returned from the war. Her estate was dispersed when she passed on and it was acquired by ShopBay. See accompanying photo of the handwritten message that Sgt Stephenson inscribed on the first blank page of this book. Signed by Norman Stephenson (Germany) and by Winifred Stephenson (Hollywood). Book Description: Text is in German: "Englische und Japanische Kunst".
