In a lunar restaurant, they meet the archaeologist Gromozeka, who advises them to visit the planet of the Two Captains, since the famous traveling captains Kim and Buran encountered many unique animals during their expeditions. The heroes turn to Doctor Verkhovtsev, the director of the Museum of the Two Captains, for help. But the doctor behaves suspiciously: he does not show them the captains' diaries and begins to follow them. On the planet Blook, the heroes make valuable purchases, including a Talker - a bird that belonged to the missing Captain Kim. As it turns out later, all the other Talkers were exterminated by space pirates - the fat Veselchak U and Glot from the planet Katruk, disguised as Doctor Verkhovtsev. Two robots (subordinates of the pirates) try to take the talker away from Alice and Seleznev, but they manage to fight back with the help of navigator Basov (a new original character) who came to the rescue. Veselchak U comes to the heroes and gives them a diamond turtle, while introducing himself with his real name. The talker reports important information: Captain Kim is in trouble. After listening to the talker's speech, the crew of the Pegasus sets course for the Medusa system, where the missing captain should be. On the way, the heroes save the robots of the planet Shelezyak from diamond dust added to their lubricant (it was added to them by Glot and Veselchak for their unwillingness to give up the talker). On the third planet of the Medusa system, Alice finds mirror flowers that remember and display everything that happened before them. With their help, the heroes discover that the fake Verkhovtsev (actually Glot) and Veselchak U were on the planet. The Diamond Turtle destroys the mirrors and tries to escape, but fails. The heroes discover that it is actually a spy robot and realize that the pirates were eavesdropping on their conversations. While trying to fly to a safe place, Pegasus falls into a trap. Seleznev and Zeleny are captured by the pirates. Having knocked Veselchak U down, Alisa and Govorun manage to escape and save themselves. At that moment, Captain Buran lands on the planet, and with him the real Verkhovtsev. Alisa meets them and asks for help. Meanwhile, Veselchak U, threatening to kill the prisoners, demands the formula for absolute fuel from Captain Kim, who has locked himself in his ship. The captain exits the ship, engages in combat with Glot and Veselchak U, grabbing Veselchak U by the scruff of the neck and throwing him at Glot, and shoots back, destroying Veselchak U's blaster, and then the robots' blasters. The intervention of Buran and the real Verkhovtsev saves the travelers. The real Verkhovtsev exposes his double, the pirate Glot (Glot fakes self-poisoning with some red pill, but Veselchak U exposes this trick), then he is put in a cage. Kim and Buran meet again, and Verkhovtsev apologizes for his mistakes to Seleznev and Alisa. The captains, Seleznev, Green, Alisa and Verkhovtsev meet Gromozeka, who was worried about his friends. Veselchak U, hiding from arrest, becomes prey to the bird of prey Krok, who carries him away (whether he managed to escape and how remains unknown).
