Royal Staffordshire Pottery Wilkinson Flow Blue Sugar Bowl/Lid - IRIS

Description: This flow blue porcelain sugar bowl with lid by A.J. Wilkinson of Royal Staffordshire Pottery in Burslem, England, is very old and very beautiful. In the beloved Iris pattern, this deep cobalt and white bowl outlined in gold melds many of the Art Nouveau influences of the period, including long, flowing leaves, floral ornamentation and dotted geometric patterns. Despite its age, its gloss and shine are surprisingly outstanding, The bowl's length is 8.5 inches from the outside of one handle to the other. It's about 3.5 inches in diameter, and stands close to 6 inches from its bottom to the top of the lid's floral finial, which is, in my opinion, the highlight of this piece. This sugar bowl's condition is very, very good: There are no chips anywhere. There is some crazing on the bowl's interior and on its underside, and two very faint cracks in one spot on the exterior. There is some discoloration of the porcelain on the inside of the bowl and some signs of wear on the bowl's underside. There are a few tiny dings on the underside of the lid. In addition, there is some loss of gold on the bowl due to age. Two scratches of note: One is on the side of one of the handles, the other is on the bowl's white rim when the lid is off (see last two photos). There is only one spot of wearing on the blue decoration itself (see 3rd to last photo). While I tend to overstate flaws, in truth, it is just to be thorough. None of these issues affect this sugar bowl's true beauty and wonderful condition. The manufacturer's mark stamped on the bowl's underside reads "Iris" Royal Staffordshire Pottery - Burslem, England - F C, which was used from 1907 on without the Wilkinson name. *Please note: I have posted or will be posting a number of other Iris items on ebay in the next few weeks if you are a fan of this pattern.
