This is most likely based on the accounts given by several of the men on said boat said that they saw the captain, or what they assumed was him, swimming towards collapsible B. The cover is most likely based on the accounts of Isaac Hiram Maynard, a cook, who had made it to collapsible B after being swept overboard. He reported that he saw Smith being washed of the ship and swim in the water fully dressed. He reportedly even still wore his peak. He goes on saying that a man reached his hand out to Smith but he refused it, saying “look after youself boys” before swimming away. There are other accounts from collapsible B, some corroborate this story. What really happened to Smith we will never know as his body was never recovered.
