Description: Offered is an original World War One production German bayonet manufactured for use with the Gewehr 98 service rifle. This bayonet, known as the M1898/05 bayonet was manufactured by H. Mundlos & Co. of Magdeburg and is so marked on the ricasso. It bears its Imperial acceptance stamp on the pommel. This rare bayonet retains its original saw back (most were ground as World War One continued). It is the second pattern M98/05 and has the “low ears” and the flash guard. This bayonet is full length with a 14.5 inch blade and retains both its factory tip and edge, having never been sharpened after leaving the factory. The blade remains quite bright for its age and only mild patina, particularly given its service. It is offered together with its scabbard, which retains its original paint and shows only normal wear and has no significant dents. Overall, a rare original 98/05 sawback by a desirable maker that would be difficult to upgrade.
