Description: This listing was a for a rare antique Japanese passport. This type of passport is called a “tsuko tegata (通行手形).” They were handwritten woodblocks that served as passes or passports, enabling people to travel from one region to another. They usually were hung by a piece of cloth much like an amulet. This one has a small hole where the string would have gone through. This piece dates to the late Edo Period (late 18th- early 19th century).
