Sony before the success of the Playstation was known mainly for its high quality audio hardware and products such as the Walkman, stereo sound systems, speakers, etc. When the PS1 debuted, Sony brought its previous audio experience and knowledge in producing high end audio chips into the videogames space. All of thisprogress required expensive research and development (if you want more insight on how Sony wanted to improve sound quality in video gaming, please read about Ken Kutaragi, Former Chairman, Sony Computer Entertainment, and former Sony Sound Labs Engineer; he was involved in building dedicated audio chips in consoles); So the early PS1 models have a better audio chip and when the RCA audio out is used with a high end stereo system, music Audiophiles and artists started using the PS1 console as their dedicated CD player, hence the nickname the "PS1 Audiophile" was born. The console also came with other unique features at the time, in that the user would have to use the PS1 controller to navigate through the song tracks while also having the user interface on their personal tv. These earlier PS1 versions also had a Parallel I/O which served like an expansion port at the time, and third party accessories like the Game Shark Pro could be used with it to access cheat codes, and extract /watch the cinematic video scenes of a game (this was before games had a cinematic mode or movie mode built in to the actual game; games like Resident Evil and Mega Man X4 supported this to name some examples). Sony discontinued the Parallel I/O port, the "Audiophile" RCA Audio Out option and expensive chip, as well as the Serial Port in later revisions to reduce hardware costs, and several different variants of the PS1 exist today. This "PS1 Audiophile" version is one of the most sought after when it comes to the original Playstation. There's more to the "PS1 Audiophile" Hardware & History, but this should give a reader a good general overview of it. Console Notes: Please see all pictures for item condition. Console was carefully taken out of the box to photograph, test the games, cd features, and hardware. I'm not a professional tester, just a gamer that loves video games, and tested the console to the best of my ability (please see all pictures of item condition and gameplay) . This console is from a smoke free home, adult owned, and will be shipped to the 48 Continental United States only. Buy with great confidence, I have been selling and buying on eBay since 2006 .
