Railroad Enthusiast 1968 Summer and Autumn Rutladn Railroad #470

Description: RailroadTreasures offers the following item: Railroad Enthusiast 1968 Summer and Autumn Rutladn Railroad #470 The Railroad Enthusiast 1968 Summer and Autumn The Curtain call and uncertain retirement of #470; the rise and abrupt fall of the Rutland Railroad. 24 pages THIS ISSUE of the magazine reverts to providing a series of articles on a variety of railroad subjects--with our two longest pieces written by persons with intimate and fully-authoritative knowledge of their subjects. Phil Prince of Portland, author of our lead article on Maine Central No. 470, was a passenger on the locomotivets widely-publicized last run in 1954, and has continued to maintain close contact with her during later shifts of ownership and location. We are sure written material will be coming from the North Country when the matter is finally resolved. After all, the RREts very-active Portland Divisidn is named after the engine. The editor has been fortunate in the past to be in some most-favorable railroad locations at the right time. His years of European railroading and exposure to the Pennsylvania narrow gaugers have been recounted in past issues. In this issue, much of the material and information he acquired during a four-month stretch as a reporter for The Rutland Daily Herald in 1962 is recorded. -This was the mid-point of the long strike which resulted in the eventual demise of the Rutland Railway. Before, during and after this reportorial period, he knew the three men who were the railroad's presidents from 1954 to 1964, as well as other officials and employees of the carrier. Many of the observations made during this period are brought out of the closet and aired in this article. None of the conclusions are new or startling, and have all been said before, although not in as well an organized perspective. We are also launching a new contest this month. Paul Kutta's "Mystery Photo" has always generated such a phenominal amount of mail response that we want to see what we can "turn on" in the way of shorter written pieces. Why not try your luck with "Can You Top It?"? All pictures are of the actual item. If this is a railroad item, this material is obsolete and no longer in use by the railroad.
