PERU : SHROVE TUESDAY IN AREQUIPA - Engraving from 19th century

Description: PERU - SHROVE TUESDAY IN AREQUIPA - Engraving (litho) 19th century pasted on watermarked paper (after a drawing by Edouard Riou) - Size : 28 cm x 20 cm (margins included) - Excellent condition (without foxing - remarkably clean). [The photo shows all the engraving, including margins (to visualize the size of the engraving, the size of the margins and layout of the engraving compared to its margins). The third photo shows the back of the engraving.] Edouard Riou, born in Saint-Servan (Ille-et-Vilaine) on December 2, 1833 and died in Paris on January 27, 1900, is a French painter and illustrator. Student of the painter Charles-François Daubigny, Edouard Riou begins at the Salon of 1859 with scenes of the Forest of Fontainebleau and Orientalist paintings. But it is especially as an illustrator that the history of art knows it. In a vein close to Gustave Doré, his engravings illustrate the famous Jules Verne from the Hetzel Collection. His drawings transcribed in engravings accompany many other writers, such as Walter Scott for his Ivanhoé (1880), Alexandre Dumas for The Count of Montecristo (1887), Maupassant for Sur l'eau (1888), One evening (1889), or the prolific Erckmann-Chatrian. It also illustrates works of popular science such as The World before the creation of Camille Flammarion's man (1842-1925) or The Earth before the deluge of Louis Figuier (1819-1894). N.B.: This lithogravure from around 1860 was the subject, on our part, of a special treatment in order to make disappear the outrages of time and, in particular, the numerous foxings which smeared it. After this treatment, we pasted it on a watermarked paper. This treatment had the effect of "rejuvenating" it; however, it remains an authentic lithogravure from the second half of the 19th century.
