PERU (AMAZON) : INDIANS YAGUAS - Engraving from 19th century

Description: PERU - AMAZON - INDIAN YAGUAS The Yagua people are a sparse indigenous population living along the Amazon River. The Yagua are a people of the Peba-Yagua linguistic family originating from the region of the Putumayo (Peru/Colombia) and Amazon (Peru) rivers. Today there are about sixty independent Yagua communities, most of them recognized, with a population of 30 to 200 people and concentrated mainly around the Amazonas and totaling about 4,500 people. - Engraving from 19th century pasted on watermarked paper - Size : 28,5 cm x 20 cm (margins included) - Excellent condition (without foxing - remarkably clean). [The second photo shows all the engraving, including margins (to visualize the size of the engraving, the size of the margins and layout of the engraving compared to its margins). The third photo shows the back of the engraving.] Édouard Riou, born in Saint-Servan (Ille-et-Vilaine) on December 2, 1833 and died in Paris on January 27, 1900, was a French painter and illustrator. A pupil of the painter Charles-François Daubigny, Édouard Riou made his debut at the Salon of 1859 with scenes from the forest of Fontainebleau and orientalist paintings. But it is above all as an illustrator that the history of art knows him. In a vein close to Gustave Doré, his engravings illustrate the famous Jules Verne from the Hetzel Collection. His drawings transcribed into engravings accompany many other writers, such as Walter Scott for his Ivanhoé (1880), Alexandre Dumas for The Count of Montecristo (1887), Maupassant for Sur l'eau (1888), Un soir (1889), or the prolific Erckmann-Chatrian. It also illustrates works of popular science such as The World before the creation of man by Camille Flammarion (1842-1925) or The Earth before the flood by Louis Figuier (1819-1894).
