The glosses on the Pentateuch (without the Haftorahs) by David Levi and Isaac Delgado were published 140 years ago, and are, besides, unobtainable to-day. In 1844, De Sola, Lindenthal, and Raphall began a commentary on the Sacred Scriptures, of which Genesis alone appeared. The English translation, however, was fantastic, the notes voluminous, and the Haftorahs were not included. for the Synagogue or for the Jewish Home. England and America, either omitted the Hebrew text or were without a Commentary for general use. TEXT. I am deeply grateful to the Committee of the British and Foreign Bible Society for their courtesy in generously granting me the use of the plates of their standard and beautiful edition of the Hebrew Text. COMMENTARY. In the preparation of the Commentary I have had the valuable assistance of Dr. J. Abelson (Gen. I-XI and Numbers) ; Dr. A. Cohen (Gen. XII-XXXVII, Exod. XXI-XL, Leviticus, and Deut. I-vI) ; the late Rev. G. Friedländer (Gen. XXXVII-L and Exod. 1-xx); and the Rev. S. Frampton (the Haftorahs). In placing their respective manuscripts at my disposal, they allowed me the widest editorial discretion. I have condensed or enlarged, re-cast or re-written at will, myself supplying the Additional Notes as well as nearly all the introductory and concluding comments to the various sections. collaborators, as well as to Prof. I. Epstein and the Rev. M. Rosenbaum for much helpful criticism, I would herewith express my heart-felt thanks. AUTHORITIES. Jewish and non-Jewish commentators ancient, medieval, and modern -have been freely drawn upon. 'Accept the true from whatever source it come,' is sound Rabbinic doctrine even if it be from the pages of a devout Christian expositor or of an iconoclastic Bible scholar, Jewish or non-Jewish. This does not affect the Jewish Traditional character of the work. My conviction that the criticism of the Pentateuch associated with the name of Wellhausen is a perversion of history and a desecration of religion, is unshaken; likewise, my refusal to eliminate the Divine either from history or from human life. In concluding this labour of love, I recall the sacred memory of one, cut off in the midst of her years, whose wise counsel and religious enthusiasm induced me to undertake, amid the distractions and duties of my office, the vital task of a People's Commentary on the Pentateuch.
