Description: 4 ORIGINAL 1982 BEN BLACK (1922-2003) MIXED MEDIA PAINTINGS FOR THE ROYAL DOULTON SERIES 'BEHIND THE PAINTED MASQUE'I acquired the life work of the Boston artist Ben Black (1922-2003) a few years ago. Known for his clown drawings and paintings, many of which were used by Royal Doulton, he also did quite a few illustrations for calendars and other printed material. For those not familiar with the artist, I have included his biography below. I have sold almost all of the clown paintings from the estate and then when I was out at Brimfield, I found this group of 4 paintings. As soon as I saw them, I knew what they are. These are the original paintings that were created for the series of 4 plates Black did for the series 'Behind the Painted Masque' plates in 1982 for Royal Doulton. If you google those plates you will see that these are the images. This is the complete group of 4 original mixed media of ink, watercolor, gouache, and marker. They each measure about 14 inches in diameter and are signed in ink below. All in outstanding original condition. Double archival mattes and gold frames are complimentary and ready to hang. Frames show a few nicks. Frames measure 21 1/2 x 21 1/2 inches. For those not familiar with the artist, I have created a small biography based on the gallery exhibition pamphlets and newspaper articles I acquired with the collection. For a more detailed exhibition and collection list feel free to email me: "Ben Black (1922-2003). Born in Boston, he graduated Massachusetts College of Art in 1947 after serving in World War 2. He began his career as an art director in one of Boston's leading advertising firms, later leaving to create his own studio where his works were included in The New Yorker, Saturday Evening Post, Reader's Digest and others, establishing himself as a leading American Illustrator. He had many solo and group exhibitions throughout New England and his work is collected throughout the world. Originally known for his clowns, he created a limited edition series of plates for Royal Daulton as well as clown figurines for Schmidt.
