Excellent general condition, faint creases and minor tears in left margin. BRAND/COMPANY: The figure of Mother Goose is the imaginary author of a collection of French fairy tales and later of English nursery rhymes. As a character, Mother Goose appeared in a song, the first stanza of which often functions now as a nursery rhyme. “Old Mother Goose, When she wanted to wander, Would ride through the air, On a very fine gander.” This, however, was dependent on a Christmas pantomime, a successor to which is still performed in the United Kingdom. The term's appearance in English dates back to the early 18th century, when French fairy tale author, wrote and published, Contes de ma Mère l'Oye [ Tales of My Mother Goose ] was first translated into English. STORY/DESCRIPTION: Original Vintage 1930's Art Deco MOTHER GOOSE Theatre Show POSTER for an English stage pantomime production of Mother Goose. One of two different images from the production, this c. 1930s stone lithograph. The artwork features a fantastic illustration of Mother Goose riding a gigantic goose. She feels less the wicked witch and more a benign smiling young woman, holding a broom in one hand and the reins guiding the goose, in the other. In the distance we see a small village with glowing windows lit by candles and a landscape covered in snow. There is an oddly drawn full moon and we see some stars scattered across a deep blue night sky. Remember, in the 1930s, the world was in the depths of the Great Depression and subsequently the theaters were full. This poster was printed by the theatrical printers Taylor's of Wombwell, in Yorkshire, who were leading lithographic printers of posters for provincial theaters during the 1930s.
