BID WITH CONFIDENCE - SATISFACTION GUARANTEED NEWFOUNDLAND 101 1911 10c VIOLET BLACK PAPER MILLS JOHN GUY VF MPH CV$130 Ten cent, violet black, 'THE PAPER MILLS - GRAND FALLS' stamp from the John Guy issue of 1911, engraved, no watermark*, line perf. 14.2x14.2. Approximately 30% of original gum disturbed by previous hinging, hinge remnant. Very good, fault-free example of this stamp. Stamp shown is a good representative of those that are available. If the stamp received fails to meet expectations, it may be returned for a replacement or full refund. Postal authorities were not happy with the quality of the 1910 lithographic stamps and decided to re-issue the 6c, 8c, 9c, 12c and 15c values using the Macdonald and Sons engraved plates. The print contractor was changed from Whitehead, Morris and Company to A. Alexander and Sons Limited of London. The engraved stamps were printed on stout and crisp white wove paper with horizontal mesh, white (almost colorless) gum. The 1910 and 1911 stamps were produced to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the establishment at Cupers Cove (Cupids) in Conception Bay in 1610 of the second (after Jamestown in 1607) British "Plantation" in North America. Sponsored by the London and Bristol Company of England, the actual "planting" of the new colony was supervised by John Guy. This stamp and the 9c stamp had nothing whatsoever to do with John Guy but were simply not to be missed opportunities to promote Newfoundland's recent entry into the paper industry on a world scale with the 1909 completion of the Harmsworth Pulp and Paper mill in Grand Falls. * E TOWGOOD FINE watermark has been reported on the 9c and 15c value in this issue (re. Newfoundland Specialized Stamp Catalogue by Walsh and Butt) Images should provide all the information necessary to make a reasonably intelligent bid on this lot.
