Volumes I (Register of Ships), II (Appendix), and III (Shipowners) were issued in July and Volume IV (Directory) was issued in January. The volumes were sold both individually and as a set. Volume IV (Directory) contains the following four sections:Shipbuilders. Includes two subsections: Shipbuilders, Marine Engine Builders and Boilermakers; and Shipbuilders and Existing Ships Built by Them. The first subsection provides a comprehensive list of companies involved in the construction of marine vessels. This subsection is organized by country and then alphabetically by city within each country. Listed companies are identified for each of the following applicable roles: shipbuilder, marine engine builder, and/or boilermaker. The second subsection is an alphabetical listing of shipbuilders and all of the ships built by them that were still in service in 1959-60. Data provided for each ship, includes: tonnage; dock number; and propulsion type (e.g., steam reciprocating, steam turbine, oil engine, gas turbines, non-propelled barge, etc.).Docks. Includes an index and five subsections: Naval Docks, Etc., in Great Britain; Dry Docks, Etc.; Dry Docks of 700 Feet and Above; Wet Docks, Etc.; and Density of Water at Various Places. For the first subsection on naval docks in Great Britain, entries are organized alphabetically by port name and then by dock name. For each dock, descriptive statistics (dock length, breadth of entrance, height of sill above bottom of deck, and depth at mean high water spring tides) and remarks are provided. The second subsection (Dry Docks, Etc.) provides data on dry docks & floating docks and pontoons, patent slips & gridirons. Entries are organized by continent, nation, and port. Each entry provides the name of each dock’s proprietor and additional information in a column entitled “Other Particulars.” The third section on dry docks with lengths of at least 700 feet, entries are organized by port name and provide data on length, breadth, and depth on sill at typical spring high tides. Ownership is also identified. The fourth section on wet docks is organized by continent, nation, and port. Includes descriptive metric data and detailed descriptions of many ports. The last subsection provides data on water density for selected ports in Great Britain.Telegraphic Addresses. An alphabetical listing of firms that provides postal address, telegraphic addresses, telex numbers and codes employed.Marine Insurance. Provides information on companies in Great Britain that provided marine insurance.Condition: Tight and sound binding. Scratch on front cover. Interior is crisp and clean.
