KING WILHELM I (GERMANY) - MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT SIGNED 05/27/1878 - HFSID 279740 KAISER WILHELM I Kaiser Wilhelm I signed this document in 1878, cutting off an allowance to a widow in favor of a large lump of money. This letter was signed in between two assassination attempts on his life that year. Manuscript document signed "Wilhelm". 1 page, 8¾x10½, 1 sheet folded. Berlin, Germany, May 27, 1878. In German, translated: "Due to the report of the 5th of this month I authorize you the again enclosed petition of the widow of the former palace supervisor of Babelsberg, Stock, at Potsdam from March 28th for allowance of a continuing support to provide a declining note, but simultaneously pay the following 750 Mark, which I grant her as an one-time gift out of my casket. To the chief house and lord steward." Wilhelm I was the target of two assassination attempts in 1878, one on May 11, the other on June 2. This letter was written between those attacks. Wilhelm I (1797-1888, born in Berlin, Germany) was King of Prussia since 1861 and led German armies in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). Before his reign, Germany was a series of autonomous states. His Prime Minister Otto von Bismarck brought the states together into a united Germany in 1871, and a reluctant Wilhelm I was named the First German Emperor, or Kaiser. Lightly toned, stained, soiled, creased and rippled. Upper right corner of second leaf is missing. Light tear in upper right corner. Random ink stains. Otherwise in fine condition.
