Description: Baker's Dozen Review by Eugene Chadbourne This album is so straight to the point it reminds one of a roadside smokehouse that serves barbecued meat, and nothing but barbecued meat. And the back cover of the album actually looks like a menu from such a place. Fiddler Baker and his accomplices, including mandolinist Sam Bush when he was young enough to be called Sammy, whip through a dozen classic country fiddle tunes as if demonstrating that nothing else could possibly be as important. This is totally classic old-time music from the heart of the North Carolina Piedmont, but the musicologists can argue about whether Baker is going too far claiming authorship of some of these titles. The pickers constantly attempt to outdo each other, with some of the finest soloing coming from Butch Robbins on banjo and the Greek-American flatpicker John Kaparakis.Kenny Baker (4) – A Bakers Dozen - Country Fiddle TunesKenny Baker (4) - A Bakers Dozen - Country Fiddle Tunes album coverMore images Label:County Records – 730Format:Vinyl, LP, AlbumCountry:USReleased:1989Genre:Folk, World, & CountryStyle:BluegrassA1Johnny The BlacksmithA2Shelby RockA3Sam's TuneA4Ragtime AnnieA5Doc Harris The FishermanA6Sail Away LadiesB1Greenleaf BreakdownB2Cross Eyed FiddlerB3Black Mountain RagB4Indian Killed A WoodcockB5Denver BelleB6Hickman CountyBanjo – Butch Robbins*Bass – Ebo WalkerFiddle – Kenny Baker (4)Guitar – John KaparakisMandolin – Sammy Bush*Photography By [Cover], Layout – Don KissilPhotography By [Kenny Baker] – Martin FoxProducer – David Freeman (5)Recorded By – Charles FaurotWritten-By – Kenny Baker (4) (tracks: A1 to A3, A5, B1, B2, B4, B5), Paul Warren (4) (tracks: B6)Matrix / Runout (Variant 1- Runout, Side A, Etched: County 730 AMatrix / Runout (Variant 1- Runout, Side B, Etched: County 730 BNo additional runout Tracks A4, A6 and B3 are public domain.Includes 1989 Catalog Insert from County Records.Plain White Factory Inner Sleeve. GOLDMINE GRADING MINT ---- It should appear to be perfect. No scuffs or scratches, blotches or stains, labels or writing, tears or splits. Mint means perfect. NEAR MINT ---- Otherwise mint but has one or two tiny inconsequential flaws that do not affect play. Covers should be close to perfect with minor signs of wear or age just becoming evident: slight ring-wear, minor denting to a corner, or writing on the cover should all be noted properly. VERY GOOD PLUS ---- The record has been handled and played infrequently or very carefully. Not too far from perfect. On a disc, there may be light paper scuffs from sliding in and out of a sleeve or the vinyl or some of the original luster may be lost. A slight scratch that did not affect play would be acceptably VG+ for most collectors. VERY GOOD ---- Record displays visible signs of handling and playing, such as loss of vinyl luster, light surface scratches, groove wear and spindle trails. Some audible surface noise, but should not overwhelm the musical experience. Usually a cover is VG when one or two of these problems are evident: ring wear, seam splits, bent corners, loss of gloss, stains, etc. GOOD ---- Well played with little luster and significant surface noise. Despite defects, record should still play all the way through without skipping. Several cover flaws will be apparent, but should not obliterate the artwork. POOR ---- Any record or cover that does not qualify for the above "Good" grading should be seen as Poor. Several cover flaws.
