Description: Author: J.M. SyngeTitle: The Playboy of the Western WorldPublisher: Maunsel & Co. - DublinEdition: 1907 First EditionPages: 87 Description: A very good copy of John Millington Synge's most famous work 'The Playboy of the Western World.' A first edition and although it states the April 1907 Second Edition on the copyright page, it is actually the Second printing, and it is lacking the rare dust jacket. Condition: 8vo. 87 pages, publishers' original red cloth over a tan cloth spine with spine titles in red, rough-cut edges. This edition features the black and white portrait frontispiece of Synge by Yeats entitled 'Synge at rehearsal - W.B. Yeats Jan 25 1907'. The corners are bumped, fraying to the spine ends, wear along the spine and a few spots to the cloth boards. Some foxing and toning to the endpapers and a few preliminary pages, paper cracked at the gutter on the blank page prior to the rear endpaper. The bookseller $1.00 price written in pencil on the upper rear endpaper. The Ex-Libris label of George Archer Ferguson affixed to the front pastedown, and some toning to the copyright page where a small Abby Theater review of the play has been tipped in. (The play received hostile audience reactions and caused riots in Dublin during its opening run at the Abbey Theatre, which Synge had co-founded with W. B. Yeats and Lady Gregory). Overall, a very good copy of this important work by the Irish playwright published shortly before his death in 1909 at the age of thirty-seven. ==================================================Shipping: FREE USPS Media Mail.
