Owens and the other 17 Black athletes representing the United States in Berlin faced segregation back home but found plenty of success in Germany. None shined brighter than Owens, who became the first American track and field star to win four gold medals in a single Olympic Games. He won the 100 meters (10.3 seconds), 200 meters (record 20.7 seconds), long jump (record 8.06 meters), and ran the opening leg of the champion 4x100-meter relay team (39.8 seconds), helping the U.S. to 57 total medals—including 24 golds. In 1901, more than a dozen British tobacco companies merged to form the Imperial Tobacco Company in response to the potential international reach of the American Tobacco Company. Much like the ATC, which produced the 1909-11 T206 baseball card set and inserted the cards within its various tobacco brands, Imperial Tobacco did the same. In 1937, their set focused on Olympic champions like Owens, and collectors found cards in Ogden and Hignett Bros. & Co. cigarettes. Cards from the Hignett Bros. & Co. series do not surface nearly as often, so this PSA 8 example of Owens’ offering will delight collectors in this month’s Vintage Premier Auction. PSA has assessed 257 examples of Owens’ Ogden card but only 18 of his Hignett Bros. & Co. card. Only three examples have earned a higher designation than this Pop 3 offering, which will likely leave collectors sprinting to their chance to bid.
