In 1979 the unit was re-established as the 16th TFTS at Hill AFB and deactivated in 1986. In February 2003 the unit was reactivated as the 16th WPS (Weapons School) at Nellis AFB, Nevada with the purpose to train pilots on the operation and tactics of new F-16 Freedom Fighter. In 2015 their mission changed when the first F-35A arrived with an additional six F-35s join the squadron with one being AF 12-5053.
