Description: These are 2 original Harper's Magazines from September, October, and November, 1858, rebound in sturdy glue-edge binders for easy reading and page protection. The price is for each mag....you choose which one. These magazines should be read, handled and enjoyed. Harper's Magazine began in 1850 as a monthly collection of news, literature, and culture. Harper's serialized novels by famous authors of the time, including: Mark Twain, Jack London, Herman Melville, Edith Wharton, the Bronte sisters, Charles Dickens, William Makepeace Thackeray, George Eliot, Alexander Dumas, Willa Cather, Stephen Crane, H. Rider Haggard, Joel Chandler Harris, Bret Harte, Lafcadio Hearn, Henry James, Sarah Orne Jewett, Horatio Alger, Stephen A. Douglas, Theodore Dreiser, Horace Greeley, Winslow Homer, William Dean Howells, Henry James, John Muir, Frederic Remington, Booth Tarkington and Theodore Roosevelt. Some of these serialized novels were published as they were written, before they were combined and published as a single book. Harper's "first editions" include Thackeray's "The Virginians", and stories by Mark Twain and Jack London. For today's reader, most interesting will likely be the contemporary news and reports from around the world, offering a window into the nation and world around 160 years ago. Below are highlighted perhaps the most intriguing content in this issue. We note which articles and reports (usually illustrated) are contemporaneous, and which are historical. The Current Events section is always fascinating as it provides the monthly news, but is not illustrated. These rebound pages would mostly be classified as in "good" condition, with normal browning and foxing for their age. Any small tears found were mended with tape. The protection and strength provided by the re-binding provides an excellent reading experience. We hope you enjoy this trip into the past. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------October, 1858...some interesting content:***some Articles (illustrated): Strain's ride over the Andes (historical, a decade earlier, from his notes, upon his death); Islands and Shores of Greece (current exploration); The Virginians (serialized novel by famous Thackeray) (first published here in chapters, then combined in book form in 1859). ***Monthly record of current events (detailed discussion of): Atlantic Electric Telegraph cable laid from Newfoundland to Ireland (1695 miles)--- big whale nearly snapped it.
