I mean it's the 1981 Spring Tour we're talking about here my fellow Dead Fans, and these were the days still the ' relatively ' early days in the 30-Year Career of The Grateful Dead - where the ability to play smaller & more intimate Venues was still fair game ! And in this rare case - we are talking about The Grateful Dead setting up shop & doing what they do best - delivering some of the best live Rock 'n Roll this Planet has ever seen ... taking it right to the People ! ... at the Vintage & Awesome ! Stanley Theatre in Pittsburgh ! And in fact ... this 3/5/81 Show was the 1st Show of a 2-Show stand at the Stanley Theater - and was indeed the Very-Last ! time the Band ever did grace this cozy & rustic Pittsburgh, PA Theater ! While in fact - it only happened 3-Times ( for 6-Shows-Total ) Ever !! ... 2/7/1969 ( A ) > 2/7/1969 ( B ) > 11/30/1979 > 12/1/1979 > 3/5/1981 > 3/6/1981 - with this '81 Spring Tour stand ( 3/5/81 & 3/6/81) being the Last / Final Dead Show at this Historic ! Venue. And, whether the Dead thought they'd be able to come back here and play again, or not ( probably ? ) - there was some what feels like ' Extra-Special ' G.D. Live-Magic ! at this 3/5/81 Show ! Though it's pretty tough to top the 12/1/79 Show ( Wow !?!! ) - and both of the '69 Shows are nothing short of " Ridiculous " - through & through ... Both !! of these '81 Shows were nothing to turn the nose up to - as the Band as a whole was " On ! " ... and consistently jumping on the G.D. Live-Magic ! Train !! I mean cutting straight to the chase ... Alabama > Greatest Story ! right out of the gate !! ... the C.C. Rider is Jammed ! - Althea is Super-Duper Sweet ( listen to This-One ! ) - and then, following a little Mama Tried > Mexicali diddy ... More ! G.D. Magic !! - of the certainly " Interesting & Unique " Kind >>> To Lay Me Down > Minglewood > Tennessee Jed > Music Never Stopped ! to close Set I ! ... I mean - Whoa !?!! And, once again ... " All " well-worthy of a ' Listen ' ! And then ... for Set II ! >>> it starts straight-out with a " Jam " ! ... which Hammers ! into a Big-League Passenger !!! -- and then, my fellow Dead Fans ... Scarlet > Fire > Playin' !!!!! Exceptional !!! Version ! with Playin' certainly meeting the caliber & challenge of the Scarlet > Fire ! And, nope ... they are nowhere close to done - and, following Drums/Space >>> NFA !!! ( Big-Garcia !!! ) > Wharf Rat > Around > Johnny B. Goode !!! And, we all know the deal with J.B.G. --- > They play it to close when they are HOT !! And, Hot they were for sure ... so yeah, a little pat-on their own backs - and So-Deserved !!! U.S. Blues follows for the Encore - then the next-nights Show on 3/6/81 ... and that was-indeed all she wrote Grateful Dead-Wise for the Good Ol' Stanley Theater ! As from here on out in Pittsburgh ... it was pretty much ' The Civic ' ( aka. The Igloo ! ) - and one Killer ! Show on Summer Tour '90 at Three Rivers Stadium that was So-Hot ! ... that you very-likely know it best as " View From The Vault I " !!! One of my favorite Shows ever, as I must say ... Ha ! And, as far as this 3/5/81 Show goes - from the Very-Last Dead run at The Stanley Theater ! ... just an Essential ! Grateful Dead " Skull & Crossbones " Pass which still exists to directly represent the Grate-ness ! of This-Show ! - this G.D.
