Achillea filipendulina- Golden Yellow FernLeaf Yarrow USDA Zone's 2 - 9 Yarrow is an easy perennial, growing in nearly any sunny situation, even where there is poor soil. This species forms a tall, bushy mound of fragrant ferny foliage, with huge clusters of golden-yellow flowers, appearing on tall stems beginning in early summer. Outstanding for cutting, fresh or dried. Remove faded flowers regularly to promote continued blooming. Not a spreading species, this has a strongly clumping habit. Staking is usually necessary, particularly if grown in rich garden soil. Easily divided in fall or early spring. Heat tolerant. It's the classic golden yellow flowering herb of the old-world, that grows to a height of 47-59 inches, making it a focal plant in the middle or in the back of any flower bed. Yarrow Achillea seeds yield dozens of brilliant 6in. golden yellow flowers, that bloom from late June to July. It's a highly drought-resistant plant, so excellent in hard to grow areas. It's nice to use as a companion plant in the vegetable garden, too - its beautiful scent, repels aphids, but attracts hover-flies, ladybugs and wasps that feed on common garden pests. Enzymes in the cells of this herb help to break compost down swiftly. Simply cut stalks down at the end of the season and breaking them into manageable pieces to be added whenever you top up the compost heap. The name yarrow applies to approximately 80 species of daisy plants native to the north temperate zone. The whole aerial plant part is used medicinally for many reasons and the Golden yellow yarrow belongs to a distinct genus in the Aster family, Eriophyllum confertiflorum Yarrow also is known as the Fern-leaf, thousand-leaf, mil foil, green arrow, wound wort, and nosebleed plant. What is it used for? Traditional / Ethno-botanical uses Yarrow is native to Europe and Asia, and has been naturalized in North America. Its use in food and medicine is ancient, dating back to the Trojan War, around 1200 BC. In legend, Achilles used it on the Centaur's advice, hence the name. In classical times, yarrow was referred to as "herba militaris" because it stopped bleeding wounds received in war. Yarrow leaves have been used for tea, and young leaves and flowers have been used in salads. Infusions of yarrow have served as cosmetic cleansers and medicines. Yarrow has been used therapeutically as a "strengthening bitter tonic" and astringent. Chewing fresh leaves has been suggested to relieve toothaches. Yarrow oil has been used in shampoos for a topical "healing" effect. Miscellaneous uses Yarrow has been used to induce sweating and to stop wound bleeding. It also has been reported to reduce heavy menstrual bleeding and pain. It has been used to relieve GI ailments, for cerebral and coronary thromboses, to lower high blood pressure, to improve circulation, and to tone varicose veins. It has antimicrobial actions, is a natural source for food flavoring, and is used in alcoholic beverages and bitters. Research to date, reveals no clinical data regarding the use of yarrow to treat any of these medical conditions. details: Achillea filipendulina Optimal Growing Conditions Sun Exposure: Full Sun or Partial Sun Soil Type: Normal or Sandy or Clay Soil pH: Neutral or Alkaline or Acid Soil Moisture: Dry Care Level: Easy Appearance and Characteristics Flower Color: Very Bright Golden Yellow Blooming Time: Early Summer, Mid Summer, Late Summer Foliage Fern Color: Deep Green which turns to a silvery green Plant Uses & Characteristics Accent: Good Texture/Form Attracts: Butterflies Garden Border Cut Flowers: Flowers Smell Great on nice Stiff Stems Deer Resistant: Yes Dried Flower: Used by Professional Florist shops Drought Tolerant: Yes Rabbit Resistant: Yes Fragrant: Used in many products Grown in Masses: Yes Flower Head Size: Very Large Height: 47-59 inches Spread: 18-23 inches Growth Rate: Fast Please Note Our Return Policy At SaveDoe: THERE'S NEVER ANY RESTOCKING FEES ON ANYTHING YOU PURCHASE and We Will Insure your Satisfaction on Every Item!
