Description: Fridtjof Nansen - A handwritten & signed 1905 letter + Farthest North published by Archibald Constable and Co LTD A letter dated Sept. 18, 1905 on Royal Societies Club headed notepaper, written on two sides and signed by Nansen in black ink, almost certainly in reply to an unidentified journalist, declining to "write on the Scandinavian question", and recommending alternative Norwegians then in London who might be willing to do so. Nansen goes on to note that "his time is very much engaged", and as a prominent Norwegian at that time he was indeed actively engaged with the dissolution of Norway's union with Sweden, which had been voted for the previous month with almost 100% of Norwegians in favour of the dissolution. Nansen had campaigned for dissolution and wrote a short treatise on the subject, then assisted in persuading Prince Carl of Denmark to become King of the newly independent Norway. With the letter is a 1905 one-volume reprint of Nansen's best known work, Farthest North, a handsome tome bound in contemporary full-calf, with gilt decoration marbled endpapers and matching marbling to all edges of the text block. Perhaps not the most interesting letter in terms of its actual content, but marking a significant juncture in Nansen's post-exploration political and diplomatic career.
