Franklin Library: CHARLES DICKENS: MARTIN CHUZZLEWIT: OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS

Description: Franklin Library leather edition of Charles Dickens's "The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit," introduced by Geoffrey Russell, Illustrated with forty illustrations by Phiz, one of the OXFORD UNIVERSITY PRESS series, published in 1984. Bound in scarlet red leather spine, the book has marbled paper end leaves, satin book marker, hubbed spine, gold gilding on three edges---in near FINE condition---except for 'very minor' imperfection to gilt. Charles Dickens, who lived from 1812-1870, was born near PORTSMOUTH, England but his family moved to LONDON when he was two years old. "Martin Chuzzlewit" was originally serialized between 1842-44. Dickens told a friend that he thought it was his best work thus far. Characters in the novel gained fame, including Seth Pecksniff and Mrs. Gamp. Chuzzlwit was raised by his grandfather. Before Martin senior took the precaution of raising an orphaned girl, MARY GRAHAM, to be his companion and nursemaid, with the understanding that she will receive income from him only as long as Martin senior lives. Martin considers that this gives her a motive to keep him alive, in contrast to his relatives, who want to inherit his money. His grandson falls in love with Mary and wishes to marry her, conflicting with Old Martin's plans. Young Martin and his grandfather argue and Old Martin disinherits him. Martin becomes an apprentice, at the late age of 21, to SETH PECKSNIFF, a relative and greedy architect. Instead of teaching his students he lives off their tuition and has them doing draughting work that he passes off as his own. Pecksniff has two spoiled daughters, CHARITY and MERCY. Charles Dickens was first and foremost a social reformer. Pecksniif is set forth in satire unmatched in Dickens's work. Pecksniff is hated by every other character in the book except TOM PINCH. Tom and Ruth Pinch are good as Pecksniff is wicked. As Pecksniff is hateful, so Tom is loveable. Mrs. Gamp is perhaps the best of all Dickens's clowns. 882 pages. I offer combined shipping.
