They open for easy cleaning and the backing locks on with a simple twist. Medical professionals routinely state masks without valves cause headaches because of rebreathing carbon dioxide. With a valve, toxic gasses are released, and the more valves, the easier it is to breathe. The CDC does not recommend a regular mask for people with breathing problems, i.e. people who are experiencing corona problems or the flu. They also forbid them for anyone under the age of 2. We actually kill most viruses in the first 3" of our nose, or expel them, which is why you don't want to rebreathe what your body is attempting to remove, when using a mask without valves. Most viruses are killed by sunlight and a mask really protects from a sneeze from you, getting to others, mostly it stops hand to mouth or eye transmission. Technically little air gets filtered through a mask, even a virus proof N95 mask (which also has a valve) because air simply takes the route of least resistance and goes in and out around the edges of the mask, creating high pressure air flow at the edges. Surgical masks simply decrease liquid splashes from entering the nose or mouth, and trust me there is usually a lot of liquid splashing going in operating rooms. These valves are made of 3 pieces and can be removed easily by turning the backing. There is a silicone flapper valve inside and you can actually remove this if you require more airflow, the air is redirected safely in an outward and downward direction.
