Description: Up for sale is an incredibly rare 19th century titled "Map of New York City and of Manhattan Island with the American Defences in 1776". Drawn originally for Henry P. Johnston's 1878 "History of the Battle of Long Island" what makes this map significant is that it is possibly the first to show all of Manhattan Island during the Revolutionary War. Printed by Julies Bien of New York as seen low right this map measures 15 x 36 inches while its old thin dilapidated wood frame measures 16.75 x 37.5 inches. The map shows correct folds, one horizontal and seven vertical. Laid down to board the map shows some water staining top center with a slight chip just above, the chip of paper is included and could be reattached. This map shows overall even toning and signs of wear. The images provided accurately represent the quality, condition and aesthetic beauty of this scarce map of Manhattan during the Revolutionary War but if you have any questions please feel free to ask prior to purchasing!
