Description: EDMOND HALL1937-1944 French import Compact Disc (CD). Classics Records 830. Mono. CASE & INSERTS: strong VG++. DISC: NM- NOTE TO BUYER: This Classics CD is an original French import 1995 pressing and NOT the cheap CD-R repressings flooding the marketplace right now. This CD begins with the Billy Hicks and his Sizzlin' Six session from 1937 and then followed by the February, 1941 Blue Note session by the Quartet which included Charlie Christian, Israel Crosby, and Meade Lux Lewis. These are fascinating sides which feature Lewis on the Celeste. They are inventive, beautifully played and supported by Crosby's bass. Hall along with virtually all musicians were sidelined by the Petrillo recording ban so the next time we hear from Hall is a five side session from late November of 1943 also on Blue Note. These are very well done and Hall's playing has become more assertive and has echoes of Pee Wee Russell's style with a raspy terminal vibrato. The content is excellent and his rendition of High Society is superb helped along by Sid Catlett's drums and a great rhythm section. A few weeks later Hall recorded a sextet session for Commodore on both 12 and 10 inch sides. The first number is Gershwin's The Man I Love. It features Eddie Heywood's piano. The last session is another for Blue note which is more uptempo in a semi-boppish mode yet it is has good tunes and clever hooks in the arrangements. These are by Hall's All Star Quintet including Red Norvo on the vibes and Teddy Wilson on piano which adds a new dynamic to the ensemble. EDMOND HALL (clarinet) with Billy Hicks, Charlie Christian, Meade Lux Lewis, Teddy Wilson, Red Norvo, Al Hall, Sidney De Paris, Emmett Berry, Vic Dickenson, James P. Johnson, Eddie Heywood, Carl Kress, Al Casey, Israel Crosby, Sid Catlett, and others.1 Joe the Bomber 2 Fade Out 3 Jammin' in Four 4 Edmond Hall Blues 5 Profoundly Blue 6 Celestial Express 7 High Society 8 Blues at Blue Note 9 Night Shift Blues 10 Royal Garden Blues 11 Blue Note Boogie 12 Man I Love 13 Downtown Cafe Boogie 14 Uptown Cafe Blues 15 Coquette 16 Rompin' in 44 17 Blue Interval 18 Smooth Sailing 19 Seein' Red *** Please be advised that the USPS is providing slower delivery service for the foreseeable future, so delays are common. Grading is visual only unless otherwise stated. I go by Goldmine standards and try to be conservative. I will play grade on certain items only - it is just impossible for me to play grade everything I put on EBAY. MINT means factory sealed, never opened or played. NM is opened but in visually brand new, out-of-the-packaging clean condition. NM- is not NM! Its a grade above VG++ and below Near Mint - it does not imply perfect. In my terminology Scratches are feeler type and Scuffs are just cosmetic and usually inaudible. DISCLAIMER. Due to the number of frivolous returns which were unwarranted, and due to the nature of sound recorded products that can be easily copied, there will no longer be a free return policy.
