This is a mock-up or early design for a children's book that was likely prepared by the artist/author while a graphic arts student, perhaps in the early 1950s. The book is entitled "Surprise For Karen," with text and pictures by Bate. The exterior of the book is worn/torn. However, the interior is completely intact and the early Bate illustrations are wonderful!! Measures 9 X 10 3/8, app. 40 pages. This is a wonderful example of Bate's early efforts to write and publish illustrated children's book. It is both a collection of wonderful illustrations and a nice example of the work products of graphic artists in general.
