Description: This listing is for a fine academic drawing of a seated youth by German painter Karl Hemmerlein (1896–1970). Hemmerlein studied at the Academies of Fine Art in Nuremberg and Munich, and under Angelo Jank at the latter. Executed in white and black chalk on black paper, this piece is a careful study of light as it falls across the figure. Light studies were an important component of academic training in the early 20th century. They helped artists learn to map the subtle interplay of light and shadow on the body, an essential skill in naturalistic representation. Here, Hemmerlein uses the black ground of the paper to represent medium tones, adding black chalk sparingly for deeper shadows. He then fleshes out the young man's contours with white hatching, building up volumes mark-by-mark to emphasize highlights. A rare and delicate piece. An inscription along the bottom edge reads: "Hemmerlein. 24.2.1915." Drawing measures approximately 13"w x 13-1/2"h. It is in overall good condition with scattered dirt and surface imperfections. The sheet has been trimmed. Note gouache marks along the bottom edge and a small tear at top right corner. There is a subtle crease across the top edge and a small loss at the bottom left. See images to verify condition and feel free to ask questions. Terms of SalePlease allow (4) business days after the auction ends for processing and shipment.
