Description: Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Discourses on Siva Proceedings of a Symposium on the Nature of Religious Imagery Edited & w/ introduction by Michael W Meister 1984 1st edition 1st printing University of Pennsylvania Press Hardcover with dust jacket 11” by 9” by 2” 362 pages of text 276 plates 544 pages totalweight 5 pounds This book comes from the estate of an 84 year old friend who was an art history professor and has just moved into a nursing home. She has well over 5,000 books in her library and we will, very slowly, be listing them on ebay. This book is in VG+ condition. The only real issue is some waviness in the dust jacket. This is NOT a water stain (there is no stain on the back of the dj or the book) and it does not affect the book in any way. I’m not sure what might have caused it. Perhaps it was sitting on a desk in a very humid environment for a little while. In any case it’s not very noticeable (see photo). Other than that the dust jacket and book are in excellent condition. No writing, stickers, rips, tears, dogears, stains, odors, mold, mildew, or water stains. The hinges and spine are firm and tight. It’s very possible she bought this book, shelved it, and never read it. Cambridge University Press writes: “This volume comprises the essays presented at an international conference held in 1981 at the· University of Pennsylvania in conjunction with the “Manifestations of Siva" art exhibit organized by Stella Kramrisch. The book includes 24 essays, an introduction by the editor, and 276 b1ack and white plates, and 55 line drawn figures further illustrate individual articles. The quality of the scholarship is almost uniformly high. Presentation tends to be technical, aimed at a specialist audience. The plates are, for the most part, clear, and references to them in the texts of the essays are frequent and appropriate, Though they are not grouped into sections, the essays have been ordered so that those treating related topics are juxtaposed. Overall the book is well edited, no mean compliment given the plethora of Sanskrit terms found in many of the essays. Dedicated to the work of Stella Kramrisch and featuring her lead essay about the cave temple to Siva on Elephanta island, the proceedings are a fitting tribute to her influence on the study of India's sacred arc: virtually every essay is concerned with the religious meanings of Indian artifacts (no empty formal analysis here). The primary hermeneutic at work in most of the essays is one that relates images - most frequently those encountered in stone temple sculpture - to religious texts: poetry, philosophical-theological treatises, ritual manuals. Though epigraphical evidence figures in a few essays, patronage - and chronology - receive relatively little attention here. The majority of contributors connect plastic forms, typically stone temple sculpture and architecture, with ideas expressed in religious texts. Principally Sanskit. Smoke free, pet free home. Everything will be mailed using re-used boxes. No handling charge. Buyer pays actual shipping costs in the continental US. I have a full time job and I only get to the post office once a week. Please do not expect this to arrive tomorrow. International bidders will pay actual shipping costs which are shockingly, staggeringly, prohibitively expensive.
